Primland Resort, Meadows of Dan, Virginia

OVERVIEW of Primland Resort

Primland was conceived by Didier Primat, a grandson of Marcel Schlumberger, one of the founders of the Schlumberger oil field services company. A lover of the outdoors, Primat acquired thousands of acres of land in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains in the 1970s, which he eventually developed into Primland, a 12,000-acre exclusive golf, hunting and fishing resort that sits some 3,000 ft above sea level. Sadly, Primat passed away at 64 years old in 2008.

This breathtaking mountain resort boasts a slate of year round activities for the whole family including golf, horseback riding, tennis, hunting, fishing, biking, archery, shooting, kayaking and more.

In June 2021, Auberge Resorts (Auberge du Soleil, Napa; Bishop’s Lodge, Santa Fe; Hotel Jerome, Aspen; White Barn Inn, Maine) assumed stewardship of the property for the Primat family.

Today, this Forbes Four Star resort was voted 2021 #1 Resort in Southeast US by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine.

THE ROOMS at Primland Resort

There are five types of accommodations, spread across the property; The Lodge, which offers 9 Mountain Rooms and 16 Blue Ridge Suites; Pinnacle Cottages and golf course Fairway Cottages which can be booked individually or groups can lodge together by opening up the common living room and 11 spacious Mountain Homes containing between one and seven bedrooms.

Just a short drive from the Lodge, three Tree Houses. These intimate cabins are set in the strong limbs of the property’s oldest and most beautiful oak trees, giving way to treetop views of the majestic Kibler Valley and North Carolina piedmont from a vast private deck.

The wonderfully rustic, yet elegant rooms boast stunning panoramic mountain views. Bedrooms are oversized starting at 400+ sq ft. Many have fireplaces and expansive balconies. Bedroom features include down duvets, wooden floors, and custom Frette linens. Bathrooms feature imported European glass mosaic tiles, soaking tubs and Bvlgari toiletries.

DINING at Primland Resort

The culinary program is under the direction of Executive Chef Elliot Cunniff, who joined the resort in Spring 2021. Cunniff worked under legendary chef Daniel Boulud before helming Soho House in NYC.

Elements, is the fine dining signature restaurant that showcases the freshest organic produce grown in their own gardens or sourced locally. With views down the rolling fairway and with the mountains in the distance, the setting is elegant and relaxed. Menu items might include North Carolina Trout, Local Quail, Roasted Duck Breast or Demkota Prime Steaks.

For something more casual the resort offers 19th Pub, serving hearty pub fare alongside a bar well-stocked with draught beers, single malts and spirits, as well as moonshine cocktails. Set on its own ridge top is Stables Saloon – located in Primland’s former horse stables – where traditional Southern food and live bluegrass music make for an entertaining evening.

THE SERVICE at Primland Resort

We visited in June 2020 during the pandemic, so not everything was open and available. However, the staff went out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable and provided the best service they could under the circumstances. Most of the service staff were local people and were friendly and engaging.
