Chatham Inn, Chatham Massachusetts

OVERVIEW

Incredibly, Cape Cod has three Forbes Five Star properties and they are all in Chatham, MA. The Chatham Inn was built in 1830 and is the oldest, continuously operating inn on Cape Cod. After a variety of owners over the years, the inn was purchased in 2014 by Jeff and Kayla Ippoliti, whose goal was to create a luxurious boutique hotel that blended the soul of the historic inn with modern decor and amenities, and a fine dining restaurant and wine bar.

This is another example, often found with Relais & Chateaux properties, where an owner’s vision creates an extraordinary property and experience

After a four year renovation, the Inn was invited to become a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux hospitality group and was awarded Five Stars by Forbes

ROOMS

There are 18 rooms and suites in the Inn. 10 have fireplaces, 4 wood-burning. We like Room #2,  located on the first floor and with a garden view. Features include their new Signature Spa Bathroom with overhead rain shower and body jets, a King bed with luxury linens, pillows and duvets by Matouk, a wood burning fireplace, wet bar with refrigerator, comfortable seating area, and an outdoor balcony with bistro table and chairs. Bathrooms feature Bulgari bath amenities and Frette towels. All of rooms feature a beige color palette, hardwood floors with area rugs, contemporary furniture and include a flatscreen television with DirecTV, USB charging stations and complimentary WiFi.

DINING

Cuvée is the signature restaurant, helmed by Executive Chef Isaac Olivo. Olivo is a graduate of the famed Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. His career has included stints at Tom Colicchio’s Craft, Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak, and the Michelin 3-Star Jean-Georges; the Forbes 5-star Peninsula Hotel in New York City, and the renowned Mayflower Inn Relais & Châteaux.

The 30+ seat dining room is a study in elegance with crisp white Frette linens, Villeroy & Boch china and Schott Zwiesel crystal. Walls are a soft beige offset by crisp white trim and bold, colorful artwork. A fireplace anchors the room.

4 and 7 course menus are offered along with an optional wine pairing. Our dinner was an extraordinary experience made more so, by the excellent staff. I haven’t enjoyed a meal this much since before the pandemic. Our menu selections for the evening included:
East Coast Oysters, Citrus | White Verjus | Champagne Espuma
House Made Ravioli, Wild Mushroom | Sheep’s Milk Ricotta | Herb Pesto
Halibut, Lemon Herb Crumb | Potato Gnocchi | Sauce Béarnaise
Seckel Pear Buckle, Poached Pear | Cardamom Cream | Almond Tuile

The wine list is a Wine Spectator award winning list with excellent choices and fair pricing. The Dining Room and adjoining Wine Bar offer 32 wines by the glass, including some super premium wines.

SERVICE

After the disappearance of many services during the pandemic, it was a delight to be met with a bellman, who took our luggage to our room. We were offered a complimentary cocktail upon check-in, which was swift and easy. When we returned to our room after dinner, it had been refreshed and prepared for the night. Another amenity we haven’t seen in a few years.

The staff couldn’t have been more pleasant, especially the dining room staff who were professional, knowledgeable and helpful in making dining and wine selections. The best dining staff we have encountered in some time.

Upon check-out we were given bottles of water, a Travel Guide from Relais & Chateaux and a jar of local sea salt branded with the Relais label.
