Century House

OVERVIEW
The Century House is the oldest continuously operating inn on the island, yet its condition is so pristine you would think it was just built. Gorgeous wall coverings, freshly painted trim, original plank flooring buffed to a brilliant shine and a wonderful collection of antique furniture all contribute to an overwhelming feeling of comfort and contentment. An artist-in-residence program, started in the 80’s, has resulted in a stunning collection of artwork featuring island locations. As B&B’s go, this moves into our list of favorites.

I love the two patios set among gardens where you can enjoy coffee and a newspaper in the morning or a good book at any time. There’s also comfortable seating on the veranda places to enjoy a private breakfast if you don’t feel like joining other guests at the communal kitchen tables. Single travelers will be as comfortable here as couples.

The location on Cliff Road is ideal, just a 10 minute walk to town, and a short distance from the beautiful Steps Beach and two of our favorite restaurants; Galley Beach, right on the water and American Seasons, just down the street.

THE ROOMS
Open May-October, the Inn features 12 rooms and 1 suite. Rooms are equipped with a desk or wrIting nook, a flat screen TV, a DVD/CD player, refrigerator, air conditioning, oversized plush

Christy Renaissance Egyptian Cotton Towels, triple sheeted king or queen beds, Egyptian cotton robes, feather or down pillows and Molton Brown toiletries (a favorite of ours). The beds are super comfortable

and the shower has great pressure. what more could you want? All the rooms are well appointed but Black Orchid, Red Dahlia, Daffodil and Partridge Berry are the most popular. 3rd floor rooms are smaller.

DINING
And then, of course, is the Berry Breakfast – a charming spread that includes Gerry’s homemade oatmeal and granola (both to die for) a vast assortment of fresh berries, home baked breads, scones, muffins, juices and more. Join the other guests in the lovely eat-in kitchen, or take one of the antique trays and enjoy your breakfast on the veranda.

The icing on the cake is that JeanE and Gerry, the innkeepers are fun and helpful, full of wonderful stories and their love for their baby is evident in everything they do.

THE SERVICE
The best accommodations have two things in common…attention to detail and the personal touch of the people managing the property. Here you’ll find both in abundance. Refreshments and snacks are set out in the living room and on the veranda throughout the day. You’ll find a beach bag with towels hanging on your door. The Inn has WiFi throughout, but just in case, there’s terminal on each floor. All day, every day, you’ll find hot coffee and tea available in the alcove off the kitchen, and some sort of fresh baked goodies set out in the parlor from cookies to macaroons to cinnamon swirls. There is a huge collection of DVD’s also available in the parlor, along with extra beach towels and a library of books spread thorough out the house (inside, outside, guest rooms, hallways and sitting rooms) that rivals any we’ve seen.

THE RATES: From $449 Peak Season Weekend
