The Wauwinet

OVERVIEW of The Wauwinet

An acclaimed Relais & Chateau property (the only one on Nantucket), the Wauwinet is located about 9 miles from town at the northeastern part of the island and if you like inn accommodations, this would have to top any list. The rooms are beautifully decorated in country pine antiques and there is a gorgeous library, accessible only to guests via a key, with a fireplace, plump, comfortable chairs, games and of course, the latest books. Port, sherry and cheese are served there every afternoon. A veranda stretches across the back of the Inn facing the Sound and is an ideal place to curl up with a book. The Great Lawn, sprinkled with Adirondack chairs and set for croquet, lies just beyond.

Guests can enjoy the use of mountain bikes, clay tennis courts, Bocci ball courts and an intimate spa. The Inn has an extensive film library which you can enjoy in your room and they’ll even send along some hot buttered popcorn. In summer, complimentary sailboats, sunfish and kayaks are available for guests.

The Wauwinet also hosts a number of activities throughout the year like a lobstering cruise aboard the Inn’s Wauwinet Lady, a 21 foot open cruiser, a surfcasting expedition, a bicycle tour and cooking demonstrations.

THE ROOMS at The Wauwinet

Rooms feature Matouk linens, ceiling fans, bathrobes, Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, fresh Nantucket wildflowers and housekeeping service is twice a day.

While all the rooms are beautifully decorated, our favorite is the Deluxe Bay View Room. Great view and a little more space than other rooms. Don’t forget to get a ride in or at least a picture with the Inn’s 1946 Ford Woody Wagon.

DINING at The Wauwinet

There is a small intimate bar off the deck and the hotel’s restaurant is the renowned Topper’s (see “Where to Dine”). Breakfast, which is included in the room price, is served in Topper’s. Topper’s Deck facing Nantucket Sound, is a favorite spot for lunch, a casual dinner or Sunday brunch, in season.

THE SERVICE at The Wauwinet

I experienced one of the best examples of customer service I have ever encountered at The Wauwinet. On one visit I awoke to take a shower and there was no hot water. I waited a little while and after it came on, I finished preparing to leave and checked out. When I arrived home I got a letter from the Inn apologizing for the inconvenience and refunding an entire night, nearly $400…and I never even complained.
