OVERVIEW of The Little Nell

Aspen is a wonderfully designed village with most everything contained in a 5-6 block radius. They have preserved the old buildings and blended in new ones seamlessly. Reminds me of East Hampton, NY, great design, galleries, tony shops, restaurants and bars. While most think of Aspen for its winter festivities, I suspect it is equally wonderful in the summer.

Virtually every list of the best accommodations in the U.S. includes The Little Nell and for good reason. This sophisticated but intimate hotel is the only ski in-ski-out hotel in Aspen and its service and dining are legendary. A complete guestroom renovation in 2019 by acclaimed designer Holly Hunt has taken their accommodations to a new level. This is where you’ll spot the rich and famous, the Trumps were there the week before I was.

THE ROOMS at The Little Nell

In 2017, Champalimaud Design refreshed all 86 rooms and suites and all guest floor corridors. The approach was to reinvigorate the spaces to be fresh, light and welcoming, utilizing palettes of blue, tan and grey to complement the relaxed nature of Aspen. Key features include plush carpet in the guest rooms and corridors, navy blue ottomans and plush decorative pillows and custom throws. New wall coverings behind the color block headboards are reminiscent of a mid-winter snowstorm or a stand of aspens, The beds are luxuriously appointed with Fili D’oro down comforters and white goose-down pillows. Bathrooms have his and her stone vanities and all natural “First Tracks” June Jacobs spa amenities and Crème de Marfil heated marble flooring and walls. Other nice touches: gas fireplaces, a warming throw on the bed, fresh orchids in vases around the room, a portable humidifier to combat the dry air and Dow Port and Joseph Phelps Cab in the mini bar. With rooms starting at a generous 600 square feet, this is like home.

DINING at The Little Nell

The hotel’s signature restaurant, Element 47, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and boasts a Wine Spectator Grand Award. Wine Enthusiast named the list one of the “100 Best Wine Restaurants in America” Executive Chef Keith Theordore helms the kitchen and the menu is a farm to table approach with an emphasis on local products. It’s called “Colorado Contemporary cuisine” emphasizing local wagyu beef, house-made pastas and seasonal produce.The wine program is overseen by Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy, who is the 10th master to come through The Little Nell.

Located at the base of Aspen Mountain and next to the Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax Tavern is the restaurant in Aspen for casual dining and people watching in a fantastic location. Open for lunch and lasting into the night this favorite of locals and tourist serves a bistro menu with a great cocktail, beer and wine list.

Great apres ski at Chair 9 which opens just as the lifts are closing. DJ’s and TV’s. Small bites menu. Bottle service.

And how about the The Oasis on Aspen Mountain, a Veuve Clicquot pop-up Champagne Bar. The mobile bar features umbrellas, lounge chairs, solar-powered sound system, flags and other eye-catching features. Guests find out the daily secret location (on the mountain) of the Champagne bar, by following Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. What fun!

THE SERVICE at The Little Nell

The staff is extremely well trained, efficient and pleasant as you might expect at a 5 star hotel, but The Little Nell takes service to the next plateau with transportation around town, an excellent Pet Program and programs like free lift tickets for a 3 day stay.
