The View at The Mirror Lake Inn

It’s not called The View for nothing. The Inn is set on a hillside overlooking Mirror Lake and the Adirondack Mountains. The view from the dining room in any season is nothing short of spectacular. The restaurant is the only AAA Four Diamond award winner in Lake Placid.

The main dining room (the one with the views) has deep raised panel mahogany walls, burgundy carpet and a wonderful marble fireplace. Tables are strategically placed to take advantage of the views. Doesn’t get much cozier.

But this restaurant isn’t just about views and nicely decorated dining rooms. It’s about a carefully developed menu that takes advantage of local produce and meats, home grown herbs and their own wonderful bake shop. In deference to the Inn’s world class spa, the menu also reflects some wonderfully tasty spa selections.

But we weren’t here for the spa cooking and unfortunately there were only two of us, so there was only so much we could try. This is one of those rare restaurants where there are so many tantalizing menu items you can’t wait to come back for another visit.

Some highlights: House Smoked Trout. Sea salt cured and apple wood smoked, Frisée, mustard vinaigrette, pickled vegetables, crème fraiche, trout caviar, Dutch Knuckle Custard. Local Sugar House Creamery cheese, marinated Cipollini onions, shaved radish, Dijon mustard vinaigrette, Breast of Pheasant. Herb roasted, fingerling potatoes and house smoked local bacon, dandelion greens, asparagus, baby turnips, fresh horseradish and Madeira glace. For dessert, the Artisan cheese platter is delicious or try the Strawberries and Balsamic. Fresh strawberries, Saratoga Olive Oil cake and traditional balsamic, vanilla ice cream, candied pine nuts.

The wine list has been recognized with Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for 18 years. There are over 300 choices, with all major regions represented and the pricing is very reasonable.

ROMANTIC QUOTIENT: A table by the fire with a view of the lake and mountains is about as romantic as it gets.
