Latitudes

There is no more romantic restaurant in Key West and maybe all of Florida than Latitudes at the Sunset Key Cottage Resort. A short 7 minute boat ride from downtown Key West gets you to a private island setting that will be the highlight of your Key West trip.

Make sure you time your reservation to allow you to enjoy the sunset, but also to sample the daily rum offering, an homage to the sailor’s tradition. The bar is so cozy and delightful, you’ll probably linger after dinner and wait to catch the last boat at 10:30pm.

You’ll sit outside overlooking to water with flickering candles and gentle breezes. You may never want to leave.

The menu features super fresh seafood, some caught that morning in local waters. Start with Chilled Key West Pinks (shrimp), so delicious they are often call the “lobster of the shrimp world”. They’re served with horseradish romanesco, cherry tomatoes and baby radish. Or maybe try the Burrata with grilled nectarine, pickled red onion, toasted ciabatta and balsamic glaze. For entrees we enjoyed Grilled Swordfish with southwestern lentil salad, tomatillo relish and a citrus marinade and Caribbean Lobster Risotto, butter poached, shaved parmesan, blistered cherry tomatoes, chives.

For dessert, we eschewed the Key Lime Pie because we had had so much of that and enjoyed the Beignets, pillow fried dough, dulce de leche pastry, cream powdered sugar and nutella sauce.

The wine list is reason alone to make this trip. While it has its share of high end big names like Dom Perignon, Kistler Chardonnay, Domaine Serene Pinot Noir and Shafer Hillside Select, it also offers a nice selection of more modestly priced wines; Mumm Brut from Napa, Chateau Miraval Rose, Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay, A to Z Wneworks Oregon Pinot Noir and Robert Mondavi Private Collection cabernet Sauvignon.
