Sound View, Greenport, NY

OVERVIEW of Sound View

We came upon, Sound View, a wonderful little gem of a hotel on the Eastern end of Long Island, via a mention in a magazine and it looked so interesting that we immediately booked an overnight. Built @1935 as a “motel”, it has been completely transformed into a charming boutique hotel by the Brooklyn design firm, Studio Tack.

What more could you ask for in a weekend escape than comfortable, waterfront rooms, killer views, fantastic dining and….a piano bar?

THE ROOMS at Sound View

The 55 rooms, most of which have been refurbished already, feature cedar plank walls, comfortable platform beds with luxury linens and custom furnishings. Bathrooms have subway tiles, great fluffy towels, (malin + goetz) toiletries and wonderful showers. All rooms have either a shared or private deck with table and chairs overlooking the rocky beach below. A big screen TV, a Nespresso machine and a refrigerator round out the amenities.

DINING at Sound View

The Halyard is the inn’s signature restaurant with an indoor dining room and tables outside overlooking the water. With a menu  “direct from foragers and farmers, growers and fishermen,” guests are treated to appetizers like Peeko Farm fresh oysters with a cucumber mignonette, New England Clam Chowder with bacon, Free Range chicken with cippolini onions, a Maine lobster roll with North Fork chips and more. Be sure to try the grilled local corn when available. There’s also a bar food menu for snacking and brunch is served Saturday and Sunday. Excellent and fairly priced wine list highlighting Long Island wines.

Jack’s Snack Shack (at the pool) pays homage to the shack that Jack Levin ran at the Souhold public beach after World War II. It offers classic American fare while enjoying the pool and the Sound.

The hotel has partnered with Joe’s Pub in NYC to bring a wonderful piano bar vibe to the North Fork.

THE SERVICE at Sound View

The staff is pleasant and helpful. Room amenities include complimentary Tate’s Bake Shop Cookies, a bottle of Pellegrino, 2 hr bike rentals, WIFI and a Continental breakfast. Wine O’Clock Library is offered Wed-Sat 4-6pm and features wine by the glass specials from local vineyards and snacks.
